Made on special Berg designed new unground domestic billets. Berg cams have the maximum surface at the cam thrust bearing area to provide full thrust bearing coverage. We have already clearanced the billet by the thrust and center bearings for our 78mm VW and/or an 82mm Porsche journal crankshafts and at the center main bearing location. Beyond that size stroke requires LA CAM017. Berg forged crankshafts have far more counterweight than any VW crankshaft to provide far more life. For this reason, when you are using a Berg forged crankshaft you must use a Berg camshaft with the base circle that was established when the cams were first designed for VW's. No others will clear the counterweights or the side of the journals. Camshaft gears are sold separately. See GB 330 through 334S selection on which cam gear to purchase for use with Berg cams All camshafts require lifters with the correct heat treat hardness (RC 52-60C) and metallurgy as genuine stock VW, such as Berg GB 325M-GB 325MM, (no VW air cooled engine needs a wide base lifter for any application). It is critical to follow the furnished Berg break in instructions to provide proper work hardening of the lobes. Please be clear that following the exclusive Berg instruction is mandatory. No new aftermarket camshaft is heat treated and depends on being work hardened by the proper hardened lifter in the first 5 to 10 minutes of running. Berg cams are ground by Engle. They are made to the exact specifications required for maximum life of the complete valve train. They are made with special VW profiles to run with specific rocker arm ratios. All Berg cams are specifically designed for specific combinations. Camshaft selection can only be made after you decide on carburetion, heads and exhaust. It is possible to have all the low end torque with maximum top RPM HP. There is no longer a need to put up with rough idle and poor low end performance to get more top end HP. Berg's correct combinations let you have it all. We have done thousands of dyno and street tests of what cams work with what combinations to deliver what you want. Because the cam numbers which the suppliers list for the duration and lift of their cams are always incomplete and are of little value, it requires experience that only we have to know what works with what. We welcome the opportunity to assist you with a proper cam combination at the time you are placing the order for the cam. |
